Second victim has died after Dallas ICE facility shooting

A second detainee who was shot at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas last week has died.

Miguel Angel Garcia-Hernandez, 32, died as a result of his injuries after he was taken off life support, a statement from the League of United Latin American Citizens said.

“My husband Miguel was a good man, a loving father, and the provider for our family,” Garcia-Hernandez’s wife, Stephany Gauffeny, said. “We had just bought our first home together, and he worked hard every single day to make sure our children had what they needed. His death is a senseless tragedy that has left our family shattered. I do not know how to explain to our children that their father is gone.”

The LULAC statement noted that Garcia-Hernandez and his wife were expecting their fifth child and had recently moved into their new home. They had four young children together.

Garcia-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was among the three detainees who were shot at the facility last week. Norlan Guzman-Fuentes, 37, was the first victim pronounced dead from the attack. The third victim in the shooting, Jose Andres Bordones-Molina, has been released from the hospital.

No federal immigration officers were hurt, Dallas police said last week. The gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that the gunman was perched on a rooftop when he began shooting “indiscriminately at the ICE building” where detainees were in a van at the facility’s controlled entrance.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has since ordered additional security at ICE facilities across the United States.
