Another California school district enforces mandatory parental notification policy for gender ‘transition’.
A Second California School District Adopts Parental Notification Policy for Gender Changes
A second California school district has taken a significant step in ensuring parental involvement in their child’s education. The Murrieta Valley Unified School District, located south of Los Angeles, recently voted 3-2 to adopt a policy that requires schools to inform parents if their child changes their gender identity.
The decision, made at a school board meeting on Thursday, sparked spirited comments from members of the public on both sides of the issue. The new policy mandates that parents be notified within three days if a student requests to use the bathroom or participate in sports teams of the opposite gender.
“We have young kids who are flirting with these different ideations about what their gender is at a very young age because right now the state of California, for whatever reason, is intent on allowing minors to alter who they are physically,” said school board member Nicolas Pardue during the meeting.
In addition to gender identity changes, the Murrieta Valley district’s parental notification policy also requires parents to be informed if a student is involved in violence or talks about suicide.
The meeting provided an opportunity for members of the community to address the board and passionately defend or object to the policy. Jessica Tapia, a former high school teacher who is currently suing another school district, expressed her concerns about the current state guidance, stating, “As a parent myself, I can’t help but think how anti-family the current state guidance is. Parents are the greatest protectors.”
Recognizing the importance of parental involvement in children’s mental and physical health, school board President Paul Diffley emphasized, “I don’t think there should be anything hidden because I have a fundamental right as a parent to bring up my child.”
This policy mirrors a similar one adopted last month by the Chino Valley Unified School District, located just east of Los Angeles. However, the California attorney general responded to the Chino Valley district’s decision by launching a civil rights investigation into potential legal violations.
“This is a ploy to try to scare all the other boards across California from adopting the policy,” said Chino Valley school board president Sonja Shaw. “I won’t back down and will stand in the gap to protect our kids from big government bullies.”
The California attorney general quickly denounced the Murrieta Valley district’s new policy, referring to it as a “forced outing policy.” In a press release, the attorney general stated, “I am deeply disturbed to learn another school district has put at risk the safety and privacy of transgender and gender nonconforming students by adopting a forced outing policy.”
Gender identity and parental notification in school policies have become a hot-button issue in recent years, with parents expressing concerns about children being allowed to adopt a new gender identity without their knowledge. The adoption of these policies reflects the ongoing debate surrounding the rights of parents and the well-being of transgender and gender nonconforming students.
