Authorities have expanded their search for the murder suspect who was “accidentally” released and are now offering up to $10,000 reward for information.
Investigators had been tirelessly searching for Kevin Mason, the murder suspect, for two years in Indiana on a murder warrant out of Minnesota. However, just two days after finally apprehending him, the 28-year-old was unexpectedly released again on September 13th due to a “clerical error.”
A thrilling manhunt is now underway to find the elusive murder suspect once more. Authorities deliberately kept his accidental release under wraps for six days to gain a “tactical advantage” in locating him.
Mason had been taken into custody on September 11th on three separate warrants in different jurisdictions in Minnesota.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department, the 28-year-old had previously faced charges of second-degree murder for a shooting incident in the parking lot of the Shiloh Temple in Minneapolis in June 2021, which resulted in the death of Dontevius Ahmad Catchings.
Colonel James Martin from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference on Tuesday, where they announced the escape and appealed to the public for assistance.
“Our clerk who was reviewing it saw three Minnesota holds, but didn’t realize what she was doing obviously,” Martin stated. “It’s a critical error, critical mistake. They’re identified very specifically by the originating agency that did it. They have a specific ID number, they’re all different, and the case numbers are all different.”
According to an inmate, a clerk in the detention center mistakenly removed two out of the three holds on Mason because she thought they were duplicates. The next day, a different clerk released the final hold.
“This was an error. This should have not happened. Mason should not have been released from our custody. This was discovered shortly after he was released,” Martin said.
Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal expressed full confidence in locating and apprehending Kevin Mason in a statement on Friday.
Furthermore, investigators have learned that on the night of the escape, Mason contacted his girlfriend, Desire Oliver, to come and pick him up.
Authorities have discovered that Oliver had purchased a new phone, men’s underwear, a travel kit, and men’s slippers for Mason.
On Wednesday, Oliver was located and arrested for assisting a criminal and is currently in custody. However, Mason remains at large.
Both clerks responsible for the criminal’s release have been terminated from their positions.
The United States Marshals Service, now leading the investigation, is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of Mason.
