Sean Duffy teases updates for air traffic control system this week – Washington Examiner
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that an update regarding the national air traffic control system will be revealed this Thursday, describing it as a long-needed reform. This proclamation follows recent issues at Newark liberty International Airport, where a brief loss of communication with planes resulted in numerous flight delays and cancellations, attributed to staffing shortages and technical difficulties. Duffy emphasized the urgency of addressing these systemic problems, highlighting that they indicate a frail air traffic control framework. He stated plans for a extensive overhaul of the system, including the introduction of new technology and more air traffic controllers, to enhance safety and efficiency. Additionally, he commented on recent incidents at Reagan Washington National Airport, where two flights had to abort landings due to the presence of a Black Hawk helicopter carrying VIPs, expressing concern over the necessity of such travel.
Sean Duffy teases updates for air traffic control system this week
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed that there will be an announcement for the nation’s air traffic control system this Thursday, which he argued is a long time in the making.
Duffy’s tease comes after air traffic controllers at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey lost communication with planes briefly. This airport also saw almost 500 delays and 141 cancellations on Sunday, which officials have stated staffing problems and technical challenges were to blame.
The transportation secretary argued that the brief loss in communication at Newark is a sign that the transportation department has “a frail system in place,” and that it needs to be addressed. As such, Duffy said that air traffic has been slowed at the airport to increase safety, and that all the airports that use Newark need to “come up with a plan” in order to reduce traffic at this airport.
“We are going to radically transform the way air traffic control looks,” Duffy explained on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle. We’re going to build a brand new traffic control system, from new telecom to new radars to new infrastructure. We’re bringing on new air traffic controllers. This has been a problem in the decades coming, and we’re going to fix it. Donald Trump loves the airspace. He talks about airplanes. He’s bought in with the plan. We’re going to announce it on Thursday, so stay tuned. It’s going to be great. Huge.”
Duffy also addressed how two flights aborted their landings at Reagan Washington National Airport last week due to a Black Hawk helicopter carrying “VIPs.” The transportation secretary said he did not know who was traveling on the helicopters, and that “we should find out.”

He continued by stating that the top brass in the White House travel via cars, prompting him to ask, “Who do these generals think they are,” to think they need to travel by helicopter. When Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham asked if Duffy could ask Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who was traveling by helicopter, he said he “should” do that.
The two planes aborting their landings at Reagan Washington National Airport comes just a few months after a deadly accident occurred at the same airport in late-January, in which 67 people died in a midair collision between an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter.
