Jack Schlossberg, the sole grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, was tapped by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Tuesday to lead the America 250 Commission.
The appointment was cast as a way to rival President Donald Trump’s own celebration of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary next July.
“We need someone who will make sure America’s 250th birthday celebrates our nation and our values,” Schumer wrote on X. “And I can’t think of a better person than Jack to take on that mission.”
In the two-minute video, Schumer said Trump “will try to aggrandize the whole thing” to stroke his own ego.
“Trump will want to take that 250 cake and just stuff it in his face and in the face of his billionaire friends. You’ll be there to stop him,” he told Schlossberg.
The America 250 Commission was established by Congress in 2016 as a bipartisan effort, but Democrats are attempting to challenge Trump’s 2026 semiquincentennial celebration. The White House established its own task force to plan next year’s festivities.
Trump sought to gain greater control over the bipartisan commission through his political appointee Ariel Abergel, a 25-year-old former Fox News producer. Abergel called on four Republican commissioners to resign to make room for new appointees friendlier to the president, the Atlantic recently reported. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) reportedly supported the effort by pressuring one appointee at the behest of Trump.
Schlossberg responded enthusiastically to Schumer’s endorsement, saying he will do his best to fight back against Trump in the new role.
“To quote our Founding Father: ‘I am young, scrappy, and hungry, and I am not going to throw away this shot,’” he said, referring to a fictional quote from Alexander Hamilton in the hit musical Hamilton.
Schlossberg has repeatedly condemned the Trump administration and his cousin, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., particularly over the recent declassification of the files on his grandfather’s assassination.
Kennedy’s grandson has generated strange headlines with his social media posts, including one demanding conservative commentator Megyn Kelly disclose her genitalia over an argument regarding her views on transgender athletes in women’s sports. He also suggested Kelly is male.

Schlossberg inappropriately mocked Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, asking his followers whether Vice President JD Vance’s wife Usha Vance was “way hotter” than his late grandmother.
The 32-year-old Democrat defended his inflammatory online presence earlier this year, saying he only makes “posts that I think are funny or silly but have a purpose” to provoke people’s reactions.
