Schiff alleges Trump’s campaign expenses indicate a ‘plan to avoid imprisonment’.
Rep. Adam Schiff Reacts to Trump’s $40 Million Campaign Spending
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) had a strong reaction to the recent report of 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump spending a staggering $40 million in campaign funds on legal fees. In an interview on Inside with Jen Psaki Sunday, Schiff expressed his concerns about Trump’s motives.
“It is eye-popping but it also shows, I think, by one powerful metric how much Donald Trump’s running for presidency is part of his strategy to keep out of jail,” Schiff said.
The Department of Justice recently issued new federal charges against Trump, alleging mishandling of classified documents and destruction of security footage at his Mar-a-Lago home. This brings the total number of charges in the indictment to a staggering 40.
Schiff believes that Trump’s massive spending on legal fees is driven by his hope of becoming the next president, which he believes would make his legal problems disappear. According to Schiff, Trump is willing to use campaign contributions to represent anyone loyal to him.
Since its launch in November 2020, the Save America PAC has already spent $56 million on legal costs. This highlights the extent of Trump’s legal battles.
In addition to the ongoing classified documents case, special counsel Jack Smith is separately investigating Trump’s handling of his 2020 election loss and is reportedly considering charges in that case as well.
Schiff raises concerns about the large sum of money being used to align stories and coach witnesses to conveniently forget important details. While problematic from a justice standpoint, Schiff believes this is the objective Trump’s team is trying to achieve.
Schiff’s Senate Campaign Outperforms Competitors
Meanwhile, Schiff’s Senate campaign is gaining momentum. According to Federal Election Commission filings, his campaign reported an impressive cash-on-hand amount of $29,800,863.87 at the end of the second quarter. This surpasses the funds raised by his opponents, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), as well as President Joe Biden, the Democratic National Committee, and even Trump individually in the same quarter.
Schiff is currently in a tight race for California’s open Senate seat as he campaigns to replace outgoing Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) following her retirement announcement.
