Saudi Arabia Signs Strategic Agreement with Turkish Defense Firm for Localized Drone Manufacturing
The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has signed a groundbreaking strategic agreement with Turkish defense firm Baykar Tech to localize the manufacturing of drones within its borders. This exciting development was announced by state-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday.
The agreement is set to significantly enhance SAMI’s role in supporting the national defense industry and strengthening local capabilities, marking a major step forward for Saudi Arabia’s defense sector.
In July, Saudi Arabia made history by agreeing to purchase Turkish drones from Baykar in the largest defense contract ever signed by Turkey.
Since 2021, investments and funding from the Gulf have played a crucial role in relieving pressure on Turkey’s economy and currency reserves. This positive development came about as Ankara launched a diplomatic effort to repair ties with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
For years, Turkey had been at odds with these two Gulf states due to its support of pro-democracy movements in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the tragic murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.
