Salena Zito says Fetterman is ‘reasonable’ in criticism of both parties
salena Zito, a Washington Examiner senior columnist, praised Sen. john Fetterman (D-PA) as someone willing to be “reasonable” and to take a mix of positions from both sides of an issue. Speaking on the Hugh Hewitt Show about the idea of a “Fetterman Republican,” she said the term denotes the ability to unpack complex issues, agree with parts of opposing arguments, and resist rigid tribalism. Zito argued that since the 2008 election and the rise of Twitter, politicians have faced greater pressure to conform and are less able to hold a “buffet” of views without being attacked. Fetterman has repeatedly broken with his party since taking office in 2022—defending Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and criticizing colleagues over reactions to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro—actions that have prompted backlash, including a promise from the Pennsylvania working Families Party to primary him in 2028.
Salena Zito says Fetterman is ‘reasonable’ in criticism of both parties
Washington Examiner senior columnist Salena Zito lamented that people are “unwilling” to be like Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who has a “buffet” of opinions.
Zito appeared on the Hugh Hewitt Show on Wednesday to discuss her recent interview with Fetterman. Host Hugh Hewitt asked her what the term “Fetterman Republican” means.
“It means that you are being reasonable and being able to unpack what you see happening on both sides,” Zito said. “[Fetterman] has an ability to step back and say, ‘Okay, this is why this is happening. This is why this is happening. And I agree with this and agree with a part of that.’”
“We’ve been unwilling to be that way, since the 2008 presidential election, and where that ability, along with that historic election, along with the advent of Twitter, has made it impossible to have a buffet of points of view and be able to get away with that without being attacked,” she continued.
Fetterman has often broken with his party since he won his Senate seat in 2022. Pennsylvania is one of four states that have a split delegation, meaning one senator from each party represents the state.
PENNSYLVANIA SENATORS SHOW RARE SIGN OF FRATERNAL BIPARTISANSHIP AS POLITICAL TEMPERATURE RISES
Over the past year, Fetterman has defended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while his colleagues in the Senate accused the prime minister of war crimes and genocide. Fetterman also called out his colleagues for disagreeing with the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro.
Still, Fetterman’s stances have come with consequences as the Pennsylvania Working Families Party promised to primary Fetterman in 2028.
