Sage Steele slams ESPN: ‘No equity, tolerance, inclusion’
Former ESPN Anchor Slams Former Employer for Silencing Her
In a series of interviews this week, former ESPN anchor Sage Steele didn’t hold back in criticizing her former employer for silencing her while allowing her colleagues to freely express their opinions on controversial political issues.
Steele, who left the company in 2021, was sidelined after speaking out about being required to get a COVID vaccine to keep her job. She revealed, “I wasn’t the only one who felt silenced, who felt scared. Some of us would literally whisper in the corner or even in the bathroom because we couldn’t speak our minds too loudly.”
Expressing her frustration, Steele added, “It’s insane and goes against everything that people preach about equity, tolerance, inclusion, and acceptance. These words are thrown around, especially in corporate America, but when it comes time to actually live by them, that’s where the problem lies.”
In another interview, Steele emphasized that the controversy arose because she complied with the rules. She stated, “I can have an opinion about things, especially if I’m complying with the rules to get the shot that I adamantly did not want to get. It’s about consistency. If my peers can freely express their opinions on political matters like Roe vs. Wade on ESPN airwaves, then why can’t I talk about my experiences as a biracial woman or my decision not to get the vaccine?”
Steele stressed the importance of consistency, particularly as a parent. “Even if you don’t like the rules, if they’re consistent, then it’s clear. That’s what saddens me the most because it didn’t have to be this way. But maybe by speaking out, more employers can be more careful and consistent,” she said.
