The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have intercepted a significant number of the incoming threats, but the attack exemplified the dangers of mass missile and drone deployments in populated areas. Russia bombards Kyiv with deadliest attack in months

Russia struck Kyiv with drones and missiles in an overnight attack Tuesday, killing at least 15 in Ukraine and injuring 116 others.

The attack, which was the deadliest in months, marks the latest escalation in a series of recent air assaults on Ukraine. Prospects of a ceasefire have waned in recent weeks as talks stall and attacks continue.

“Putin is doing this solely because he can afford to keep waging war. He wants the war to go on,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement from the G7 summit.

“It’s a disgrace when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to it,” he added.

Zelensky had traveled to Canada for the summit this week. President Donald Trump left the summit ahead of schedule, citing meetings to attend in Washington related to Israel’s clash with Iran. As a result, Trump will miss a planned breakfast he had with Zelensky.

The Ukrainian Air Force said the attack included 440 drones and decoys and 32 missiles. The air force claimed it intercepted most of the drones and about three-quarters of the missiles.

It is unclear where in the capital region the deaths occurred.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a 62-year-old U.S. citizen was found dead in a house near a strike site, noting doctors had “declared him clinically dead — biologically dead,” which left it unclear whether the American died because of the attack.

Russia has increased its aerial attacks in recent weeks in hopes it will weaken the Ukrainian air defenses.

HEGSETH WON’T SAY IF US WANTS RUSSIA OR UKRAINE TO WIN WAR

The United Nations said in a statement that the aerial attack was the fourth time this month that Russia had launched more than 400 drones and missiles in one night. It noted this was the deadliest attack in over a year.

“Last night’s attack exemplifies the grave threat posed by the tactic of deploying missiles and large numbers of drones simultaneously into populated areas, which leads to civilian casualties, and profound suffering,” said Danielle Bell, head of the U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
