ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) hit the campaign trail with former Rep. Abigail Spanberger in the final days of the gubernatorial race against Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears to urge Latino voters to back Spanberger at the ballot.
At a “Latinos for Spanberger” event on Thursday afternoon, hosted at Los Tios Grill, Gallego, a rising star in the Democratic Party, championed Spanberger’s support for affordable housing, education, and small businesses — key issues that Democrats are hoping will help the party rebuild after a disastrous 2024 election cycle.
“Thank you, Abigail, for reaching out to Latino community because this is a tough time. We feel attacked,” Gallego, the first Latino Senator from Arizona, said in his remarks to the packed crowd. “We need a tough leader, someone who’s going to lead Virginia into the future, someone’s going to make sure that Latinos have a chance to buy that home, start that business, send their kids to a good school, and really give and be part of this great country.”
Famed Latina labor leader Dolores Huerta, 95, sat in the front row of the event and afterwards urged the crowd to vote for Spanberger over Earle-Sears. Virginia Del. Alfonso Lopez, the first Latino elected to the General Assembly, implored the audience to show the nation that Democrats are fed up with President Donald Trump’s economic policies. Latino voters are one of the fast-growing voting blocs in the nation and are key to whoever the next governor of Virginia.
“We have a chance to bring hope back. We have a chance to send a message to the nation and really the world, in just a few days, with our election in Virginia, when we elect the first female Democratic governor in Virginia history, Abigail Spanberger, and the entire ticket,” Lopez said. “And when we pick up seats in the House of Delegates, and we send that message. We send that message that what is happening is not okay.”
Gallego joins several prominent Democratic leaders who have joined, or will join, Spanberger on the campaign trail, including former President Barack Obama, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA).
Many other Democrats nationwide joined Spanberger and New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill for a Democratic National Committee virtual get-out-the-vote effort on Wednesday, including Sens. Andy Kim (D-NJ), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chris Coons (D-DE), Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), and Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY).

The event comes days after Earle-Sears participated in a Conservative Political Action Conference Latino rally over the weekend with Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA), Attorney General Jason Miyares (R-VA), lieutenant governor candidate John Reid, and CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp.
Spanberger is currently on an 11-day bus tour through Election Day, with Thursday marking the northern Virginia section of stops. The gubernatorial candidate is also making stops in blue-leaning Dumfries, Annandale, Manassas, and Loudoun, where she met with law enforcement, Asian American supporters, and small business leaders.
“We are driving that beautiful bus all across the commonwealth, and everywhere we are traveling, people are excited about the reality of what this coming Tuesday means for Virginia,” Spanberger said as she spoke in Alexandria.

“We are going to win on Tuesday because it is what we must do to ensure that communities across Virginia understand that we will be relentless in working to lower the costs in housing and energy and in health care,” she later said. “That amid all of the chaos coming out of Washington and all of the unsteadiness that is hurting so many of our communities, that we are going to elect a governor who will stand up for Virginia.”
While in Annanadale, where she met with supporters at the Soricha Tea & Theater, Spanberger also echoed her commitment to lowering costs if she elected governor.
“At this moment, so many families are facing real hardships. Housing costs have gone up. Energy costs are going up. Health care costs are going up even more,” she said. “And people in every corner of Virginia, they want a governor who is going to face these challenges head on, who’s going to work to lower costs in concert with the General Assembly.”
