Tennessee Democrat Roy Herron dies after jet ski accident injuries.
Remembering Roy Herron: A Tennessee Statesman
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Roy Herron, a beloved figure in Tennessee politics. Herron, a longtime state lawmaker and former chairperson of the state Democratic Party, tragically lost his life in a jet ski accident at the age of 69.
Herron’s journey came to an end at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, where he had been receiving treatment since a collision on Kentucky Lake. The incident, which occurred on July 1, resulted in internal bleeding and severe injuries to his arm and pelvis, as reported on his family’s Caring Bridge website.
While the details of the collision are still under investigation by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, we remember Herron for the incredible impact he made throughout his life.
“Roy loved his family with all his might,” said Rev. Nancy Carol Miller-Herron, his wife. “He passed doing what he loved most—spending time with our sons and their friends in the Tennessee outdoors where his spirit was always most free.”
A Legacy of Service and Dedication
Herron, an esteemed attorney from Dresden, Tennessee, dedicated a remarkable 26 years of his life to serving the state. He served in both the House and Senate, rising to the positions of floor leader and caucus chair for the Democrats. Remarkably, he never missed a day of session, except for the birth of his youngest son.
During his tenure, Herron also took on the role of chairperson for the state Democratic Party from 2013 to 2015, leaving an indelible mark on Tennessee politics.
As a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin, Herron was a trailblazer, being one of the first students to earn joint degrees in divinity and law from Vanderbilt University. His passion for both religion and law led him to become an ordained Methodist minister. Herron’s intellectual pursuits extended beyond his political career, as he authored three books, including the thought-provoking “God and Politics: How Can a Christian Be in Politics?”
A Final Farewell
Funeral services to honor Roy Herron’s life will be held on Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Martin. It will be a time for family, friends, and colleagues to come together and pay their respects to a man who dedicated his life to public service.
The news of Herron’s passing has deeply affected many, with condolences pouring in from all corners. Former Vice President Al Gore took to Twitter to express his grief, calling Herron “a dear friend and one of Tennessee’s most devoted citizens.” Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen described Herron as “bright, diligent, and honest. A politician destined for greatness.” Republican Rep. David Kustoff acknowledged Herron’s unwavering commitment to serving West Tennessee and the entire Volunteer State.
Tennessee House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison also shared his condolences, stating on Twitter…
