Roy asks to form committee for investigating ‘radical left’ groups pushing political violence

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) led a GOP-signed letter on Thursday asking Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and other House leaders for permission to form a new select committee tasked with investigating “radical left” groups that promote political violence.

The request came after the assassination of Turning Point USA cofounder Charlie Kirk, who was shot once in the neck on Wednesday, and before the apprehension of the suspected killer.

“Enough is enough. We must follow the money to identify the perpetrators of the coordinated anti-American assaults being carried out against us and take all steps under the law necessary to stop them,” the three-page letter states.

Roy described the committee as the “best option” to “elevate and investigate” leftist groups’ alleged funding of political violence. The letter named Democratic megadonor George Soros, the Wren Collective, and the Southern Poverty Law Center as examples.

The committee, as envisioned by Roy, would employ House members and staffers with backgrounds in prosecution or law enforcement and would be granted full subpoena powers.

“We can no longer pretend to be bound together by shared ideals when a well-funded, vitriolic cadre of our fellow Americans and foreign interests are at war with the very values of faith in God, fidelity to our Constitution, and respect for the principles of liberty and Western Civilization that define us as Americans – including, notably, the free speech practiced and exemplified by Charlie Kirk,” the letter adds.

The correspondence, signed by 23 Republican lawmakers and addressed to Johnson, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), remains open for other congresspeople to sign.

Kirk’s assassination has galvanized the Republican Party to speak out and take action against political violence targeting conservatives.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said his administration would investigate “radical left” groups that fund violence.

“My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it, as well as those who go after our judges, law enforcement officials, and everyone else who brings order to our country,” he said in a video message from the Oval Office.

Trump himself was the subject of two failed assassination attempts last year. Other examples of politically motivated attacks include the December 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the June 2017 shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice that left House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) critically wounded at the time.

On Friday, Trump announced Soros and his network would be investigated for racketeering charges in connection with the funding of paid protesters over the years.
