Rosa DeLauro hospitalized, will undergo surgery for spinal stenosis
House Appropriations ranking member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) is set to undergo surgery on Monday to treat spinal stenosis at Griffin Hospital in her home state of Connecticut.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Judith L. Gorelick will perform the surgery, which she describes as “a common treatment for a common occurrence.” DeLauro will undergo physical therapy following the surgery but will return to D.C. when Congress returns from its six-week district work period.
According to the National Institute of Health, “Spinal stenosis happens when the spaces in the spine narrow and create pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.” There are many causes of spinal stenosis, but the chances increase with age.
Elected in 1990, the 82-year-old congresswoman is the highest Democrat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. The Connecticut Democrat is one of the most senior Democrats in the House.

While DeLauro plans to seek another term, she has been met with a primary challenger from Damjan DeNoble, who targets her age, saying, “our old Democratic leaders won’t pass the torch.”
DeLauro’s surgery comes after three older House Democrats have died this year, giving House Republicans more room for error as they hold a slim majority.
