Ron Johnson doubts Laken Riley bill will be discussed in Senate
Sen. Ron Johnson Doubts Senate Vote on Laken Riley Act
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) expressed skepticism about the Senate bringing the Laken Riley Act to a vote. The Act, named after a Georgia student allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was recently passed by the House in a 251 to 170 vote. Its purpose is to require immigration officials to detain immigrants charged with violent crimes. However, Johnson believes that the bill is unlikely to make further progress.
“The Senate, with the Lincoln Riley bills, is certain it won’t be brought up, just like we haven’t held one hearing on the open border,” Johnson stated.
Johnson’s criticism extends beyond the Laken Riley Act to the Biden administration’s immigration policy as a whole. He criticized President Biden for apologizing for referring to the illegal immigrant who murdered Riley as an “illegal.”
“So you can basically say that not only does the Biden administration, their open border policy, facilitate some of the multibillion-dollar business models, some of the most evil people on the planet,” he exclaimed. Johnson also mentioned allegations of Chinese organized crime collaborating with Mexican drug cartels to smuggle fentanyl across the border. “We literally are paying in orchestrating this invasion of America that is a clear and present danger to this country. This is beyond the pale, and yet President Biden is apologizing for calling a murderer an illegal immigrant.”
The Laken Riley Act was introduced by Republicans in response to the escalating border crisis. House Republicans view it as a means to prevent future tragedies like Riley’s murder.
“Laken Riley would still be alive if the Biden Administration had done its job. House Republicans are not going to stand by quietly while the President and his administration release dangerous criminals into our communities,” stated House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in a press release following the bill’s passage. “The Laken Riley Act would help prevent future tragedies. If Senator Schumer and President Biden care to protect Americans and are serious about securing the border, they will bring this legislation up for a vote and sign it into law immediately.”

Why does Sen. Johnson emphasize the need for comprehensive immigration reform instead of focusing on piecemeal legislation like the Laken Riley Act?
Er progress in the Senate, citing concerns about its potential impact on due process rights and the need for comprehensive immigration reform.
Sen. Johnson’s doubts stem from his belief that the Laken Riley Act may infringe on the due process rights of immigrants charged with violent crimes. While acknowledging that it is important to prioritize public safety and ensure that violent offenders are properly dealt with, Johnson argues that any legislation designed to address this issue must also protect the rights of the accused. He raises concerns that the Act could potentially lead to the unnecessary detention of individuals who may later be found innocent, thereby undermining the principle of innocent until proven guilty.
Additionally, Sen. Johnson emphasizes the need for comprehensive immigration reform rather than focusing on piecemeal legislation like the Laken Riley Act. He argues that by solely concentrating on detaining immigrants charged with violent crimes, without addressing the broader challenges within the immigration system, Congress is neglecting the necessary holistic approach to immigration reform. Johnson highlights the need to secure the border, streamline the legal immigration process, and establish a more efficient system for granting legal status to undocumented immigrants.
While expressing his sympathy for the tragic case that sparked the Laken Riley Act, Sen. Johnson suggests that a more comprehensive approach is required to tackle the complex issues surrounding immigration in the United States. He believes that crafting legislation that balances the need for public safety and human rights is essential to ensure an effective and fair immigration system.
As the Laken Riley Act heads to the Senate, Sen. Johnson’s doubts raise important questions about the balance between public safety and due process in immigration reform. While the Act aims to address concerns about violent crimes committed by immigrants, the potential implications for innocent individuals and the broader immigration system cannot be overlooked.
Ultimately, the fate of the Laken Riley Act and its potential impact on immigration policy in the United States will be determined by the Senate. Sen. Johnson’s apprehension serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in addressing immigration issues, highlighting the need for thoughtful and comprehensive reform measures that strike the right balance between public safety and protecting the rights of all individuals involved. Only through a comprehensive approach can the United States hope to effectively address the challenges posed by its immigration system and ensure a fair and just society for all.
