Ron DeSantis creates buzz at GOP forum in Iowa.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Receives Strong Praise at Iowa Event

During an event in Iowa, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis captivated the crowd and emerged as the “strongest overall candidate,” according to attendees. The event featured interviews with six Republican presidential candidates, conducted by Tucker Carlson.

Co-host Steve Deace, from The Blaze, reported that VIPs at the event were impressed by DeSantis and his performance. DeSantis and former President Donald Trump are the only two Republican candidates currently polling in the double digits.

Praising Pro-Life Legislation

The interview began with Carlson asking DeSantis about the pro-life bill he recently signed in Florida. DeSantis took the opportunity to commend Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for signing similar legislation.

“Well, I’m very proud to say Kim Reynolds is here. And she signed a great heartbeat bill today,” DeSantis said. “We were able to do that in Florida, we had a lot of opposition to that. I’m proud to have been a pro-life governor, and I will be a pro-life president. So I mean, of course, I want to sign pro-life legislation. I think it’s something that we need to develop a culture of life in this country.”

This praise for Reynolds comes after Trump criticized her for remaining neutral in the Republican Party primary.

DeSantis expressed his commitment to using the presidency to advance pro-life causes, even in the face of potential donor backlash.

“At the end of the day, you get into office to be able to do what’s right,” he said. “If you’re here to contort yourself into a pretzel, to try to not have to take on big issues to take the political road that’s easier to travel, then you’re not somebody that’s dependable. So we stood up.”

DeSantis also shared a personal story about the impact of hearing his first child’s heartbeat during an ultrasound, emphasizing the importance of science and technology in winning people over on the pro-life issue.

Views on Ukraine and National Security

During the interview, Carlson questioned DeSantis about his views on the war in Ukraine. DeSantis refuted Carlson’s claim that he had changed his stance, asserting that he did not believe the war was central to America’s foreign policy. He emphasized the need for a sustainable peace in Europe and avoiding further entanglement in the conflict.

DeSantis also criticized D.C. elites for prioritizing the Ukraine-Russia border over the U.S. southern border. He suggested that drug cartels effectively control the border and warned that those who attempt to enter the country illegally will face severe consequences.

Furthermore, DeSantis discussed his plans to rein in federal bureaucracy, particularly in the intelligence community. He expressed his intention to appoint a new director of the FBI on day one of his presidency and emphasized the importance of having his own team in place to prevent career bureaucrats from taking over.

DeSantis praised Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as a model of the character he seeks in his administration, emphasizing his belief in the president’s executive authority to hold bureaucrats accountable.

Other Notable Moments

Throughout the interview, DeSantis made several noteworthy statements:

  • He expressed confidence in a potential showdown between Florida and California, highlighting the freedom and quality of life in Florida compared to the issues faced in San Francisco.
  • DeSantis voiced concerns about Central Bank Digital Currencies, stating that they could lead to the elimination of cash and the prohibition of certain purchases.
