Romney: No 2024 Senate Reelection for Me
Sen. Mitt Romney Announces He Will Not Seek Re-election in 2024
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Sen. Mitt Romney, the GOP presidential nominee who lost to Barack Obama in 2012 and later became a United States senator from Utah, revealed that he will not be seeking a second term in the Senate in 2024.
Romney expressed his disappointment in the GOP-controlled House and his concerns about the potential election of either President Biden or former President Trump in 2024. He stated, “It’s very difficult for the House to operate, from what I can tell. And perhaps more importantly, we’re probably going to have either Trump or Biden as our next president. And Biden is unable to lead on important matters and Trump is unwilling to lead on important matters.”
The senator emphasized that both Biden and Trump were not serious about reducing the deficit, criticizing their stance on entitlements. He exclaimed, “You’ve got both Biden and Trump saying we won’t touch entitlements. How irresponsible is that!”
When asked about his support for GOP presidential candidates challenging Trump, Romney stated that he would not publicly endorse any of them, as he believed his support would not have a positive impact. He added, “I’m not looking to get involved in that.”
Romney expressed concern about the direction of the Republican Party, stating, “It’s pretty clear that the party is inclined to a populist demagogue message. If it can change in the direction of a populist, it can change back in the direction of my wing of the Republican Party.”
As a senator, Romney voted to impeach Trump twice, which resulted in backlash from Trump loyalists. In a 2019 op-ed, he wrote:
“After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling. It did not. When he won the election, I hoped he would rise to the occasion. His early appointments were encouraging. But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions last month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office.”
Romney emphasized the importance of presidential leadership and character, stating, “With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring.”
Regarding House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s call for an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, Romney clarified, “This is not an impeachment. This is an inquiry, and I have heard no allegations that rise to the high-crimes-and-misdemeanors standard of the Constitution.”
He further emphasized the importance of upholding the Constitution and the liberal constitutional order, stating, “I think it’s of paramount importance to maintain our commitment to the Constitution. The majority of people in America would not be voting for Donald J. Trump. The majority would probably be voting for the Democrats.”
In conclusion, Romney expressed his belief in the strength of American institutions and the support of the American people for the Constitution and its norms.
