Harry and Meghan’s request to join Biden on Air Force One was denied.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Request to Fly Back with President Biden on Air Force One Denied
According to reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, sought permission from the Biden administration to return from Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral aboard Air Force One. Unfortunately, their request was rejected.
The royal couple had been in the United Kingdom at the time of the queen’s passing in September 2022 and had stayed for the funeral in mid-September.
Missed Opportunities
Regrettably, the duke and duchess were unable to attend the pre-funeral reception at Buckingham Palace, where world leaders, including President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, gathered to greet King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Their request to join the Bidens on Air Force One was deemed a “non-starter” as it would have strained relations with the Palace and the new King.
Interestingly, this was not the only invitation extended by the duke and duchess to the Bidens last year.
Before his presidency, Joe Biden and his wife had attended the 2017 Invictus Games in Canada with former President Barack Obama and Prince Harry. The couple allegedly invited Jill Biden to the Invictus Games in The Hague last year, hoping to secure a ride on Air Force One. However, the administration was concerned that her attendance might offend the royal family. As a result, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg led a delegation to the Invictus Games in April last year instead.
