A retired Oakland Police captain is recovering after being shot during an attempted robbery.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed Ersie Joyner had undergone surgery and is in stable condition in the ICU. Officials said Joyner was pumping gas at a Chevron station when he was approached by three individuals who tried to rob him at gun point.

A struggle ensued before Joyner pulled out his own gun and opened fire, killing one of the suspects. Two of the suspects then returned fire, injuring the former captain.

Oakland’s Chief of Police Leronne Armstrong stressed the surge in crime is sweeping the Democrat-led city.

“This highlights the violence that we’ve seen in this city this entire year. We’ve seen so many tragic situations. We’ve seen so many people lose their lives as a result of violence. Again, this today, again shows us how brazen these individuals involved in this activity can be,” Armstrong said.

Police are still searching for the surviving suspects, including a fourth individual thought to be the getaway driver.
