GOP subpoenas FBI, IRS agents in Hunter Biden whistleblower probe.
House Republicans Subpoena Federal Agents in Probe of Hunter Biden Investigation
House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) and House Ways & Means Chair Jason Smith (R-MO) have taken a significant step in their investigation into corruption allegations surrounding the criminal investigation of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. This week, they issued subpoenas to four federal agents who allegedly possess crucial information regarding the case.
Allegations of a Controversial Meeting
According to one of the IRS whistleblowers, these federal agents were either present at or possess direct knowledge of a meeting that took place in October of last year. The whistleblower claims that Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who has recently been appointed as special counsel in the case, did not have the final say on whether to bring charges against Hunter Biden outside of his district. However, both Weiss and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland have refuted these allegations.
The individuals who have been subpoenaed are as follows:
- Michael T. Batdorf – IRS Director of Field Operations
- Darrell J. Waldon – IRS Special Agent in Charge
- Thomas J. Sobocinski – FBI Special Agent in Charge
- Ryeshia Holley – FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge
Recent reporting by The New York Times suggests that Weiss initially showed willingness to forgo any prosecution of Hunter Biden and was close to ending the investigation without requiring a guilty plea on any charges. However, his stance changed around the time when two IRS agents came forward as whistleblowers, alleging that they faced obstruction from higher-ups at the Department of Justice in their pursuit of the Biden probe.
Following the emergence of these whistleblowers, Weiss demanded that Hunter Biden plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax crimes and enter a deferred prosecution agreement on a gun charge.
Jordan and Smith have raised concerns about the timing of Weiss’ appointment as special counsel, especially considering that he was the one who initially approved the plea deal that ultimately fell apart in federal court.
Questioning the Department’s Handling of the Investigation
In a letter, Jordan and Smith expressed their reservations about the decision to grant Weiss special counsel status, given his handling of the case thus far and his inconsistent statements to Congress regarding his authority. They emphasized the need to speak with individuals who possess knowledge of the investigation to shed light on the Department’s handling of the matter.
