Republicans must nuke the filibuster now or Democrats will do it, Trump warns

Former President Donald Trump has renewed his call for Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster rule, warning that if they do not act, Democrats will remove it when they regain control of the Senate.Trump argues that abolishing the filibuster would enable Republicans to swiftly pass meaningful policy reforms-such as voter ID laws, banning mail-in voting, ending cash bail, restricting men from competing in women’s sports, and cutting welfare for undocumented immigrants-which he claims would lead to historic legislative productivity and secure decisive Republican victories in the 2026 midterm elections. Despite Trump’s push, many Senate Republicans, including Majority Leader John Thune, oppose scrapping the filibuster, emphasizing its role in encouraging bipartisan compromise. Opinions among GOP senators vary, with some open to reform, others undecided, and a number firmly against it. Trump and some allies continue to pressure Republicans on the issue, asserting that failure to act could cost them future electoral success.

Republicans must nuke filibuster now or Democrats will do it when they regain power, Trump warns

President Donald Trump again attacked the filibuster on Friday, listing sweeping policy changes and dangling the prospect of midterm election victories his party could secure if Senate Republicans moved forward with dismantling the delay tactic.

Trump has revived his past calls to abolish the filibuster during the government shutdown, calling on GOP lawmakers to nuke the power and pass the House-passed continuing resolution with a simple majority. Trump told reporters during a press conference Friday afternoon that if Republican senators don’t get rid of the filibuster now, Democrats will do it if they regain control of the chamber.

“The Democrats will do this,” Trump said. “So if the Democrats are going to do it, I’m saying Republicans should do it before they get a chance. It’s very simple.”

Trump upped the ante for Republicans, saying if they follow his lead and get rid of the Senate rule, the GOP will pass enough critical policy reforms to have resounding success in the 2026 midterm elections. If Republicans terminate the filibuster, Trump said the administration “will have the most productive three years in the history of our country.” But if they do not, the GOP will be “in a slog with the Democrats” and not be as productive.

“If we do it, we will never lose the midterms and we will never lose the general election, because we will have produced so many different things for our people, for the people, for the country, that it would be impossible to lose an election,” Trump said.

He listed sweeping policy changes his administration could pass without the Senate delay tactic, saying the bipartisan mission of the filibuster “didn’t work.”

“Here’s some of the things that we’d pass if we terminated the filibuster: voter ID, no mail-in voting, no cash bail, no men in women’s sports, no welfare for illegals. You could go on and on,” Trump told reporters.

Earlier Friday morning, Trump blasted the matter on Truth Social, telling GOP senators, “If you don’t do it, the Dems will, and you’ll never see office again!”

Twenty-four GOP senators, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), have stood against Trump’s effort, telling the Washington Examiner in a poll on the matter that they support keeping the filibuster in place.

Thune has consistently opposed tearing down the filibuster. Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) also spoke out in support of the filibuster on X in late October, saying the rule “forces us to find common ground in the Senate.”

WHERE EVERY SENATE REPUBLICAN STANDS ON TRUMP’S CALL TO END THE FILIBUSTER

Ten senators told the Washington Examiner that they were open to filibuster reform, 11 were noncommittal, and eight did not respond.

“Anytime Republicans give an inch, Democrats take a mile. We cannot give in. It’s time we END THE FILIBUSTER,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) wrote on X on Friday.
