Republicans Rally Behind Candidate to Challenge Sen. Jon Tester
Republicans are coming together to support their chosen candidate in the upcoming race against Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) for a fourth term. Tim Sheehy, a businessman and former Navy SEAL, entered the 2024 GOP primary in late June and has already gained the backing of influential figures such as Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT), Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT), and Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), who also serves as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. These endorsements have prompted calls for Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) to sit out this cycle and avoid a contentious primary.
Biden and Republicans Battle for Economic Definition
Sen. Steve Daines and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have been actively recruiting strong candidates in key swing states to regain the majority in the Senate next year. Their strategy hinges on victories in states like Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, where Democratic incumbents are up for reelection. With Democrats currently holding a slim 51-49 majority, Republicans only need to gain two seats to regain control.
Sen. Tester’s decision to run for a fourth term was a significant win for Democrats, as it gives them a fighting chance in a state that former President Donald Trump won by a large margin in 2020. However, Senate GOP leadership sees this seat as within their reach due to the state’s conservative leanings. They are concerned that a crowded primary could weaken their candidate’s chances in the general election.
Sen. Daines spent months persuading Tim Sheehy to enter the race, even publicly discouraging Rep. Rosendale from running after Sheehy announced his candidacy. Daines emphasized the importance of Rosendale staying in the House to build seniority and help Republicans maintain their majority. While Daines and Rosendale have been engaged in productive conversations, it remains to be seen whether Rosendale will ultimately decide to stay out of the race.
Rep. Rosendale, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, had the support of the Club for Growth in his previous bid against Tester in 2018. However, the Club for Growth’s endorsement is now uncertain after Sheehy entered the race. Additionally, reports have emerged that former President Trump has indicated he will not endorse Rosendale over Sheehy, further complicating Rosendale’s path to the GOP nomination.
Despite their joint press releases and appearances of cooperation, the rivalry between Daines and Tester adds an uncomfortable dynamic to their efforts to unseat the three-term Democrat. The Senate is known for its collegiality, particularly among senators from the same state, making this situation particularly awkward.
Daines believes that Tester is entering the 2024 race at his most vulnerable point in his political career, citing the increasing shift towards Republicans in the red state of Montana. Daines points to the influx of new voters, many of whom are likely center-right, as evidence of this shift.
Tester has not indicated a preference between Sheehy and Rosendale, whom he previously criticized as “Maryland Matt” during their 2018 contest. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has chosen to avoid crowded primaries in must-win general election races, focusing instead on supporting vulnerable incumbents like Tester, Joe Manchin (D-WV), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Sherrod Brown (D-OH).
