Top zingers and jabs from the initial Republican debate
Notable Zingers from the First Republican Presidential Primary Debate
During the first Republican presidential primary debate, the candidates didn’t hold back when it came to delivering one-liners and jabs. Some of these zingers hit the mark, while others fell flat. Here are a few memorable moments from Wednesday night’s debate:
Chris Christie to Vivek Ramaswamy:
“I’ve had enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT standing up there.”
When asked about climate change, Ramaswamy dismissed it as a hoax. This prompted Christie to interrupt him, calling him an “amateur” who speaks like the artificial intelligence tool, “ChatGPT.”
Doug Burgum:
“I took them a little too literally when they told me to go to Milwaukee and break a leg.”
Prior to the debate, Burgum injured his Achilles tendon while playing basketball with his staff. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his participation, he used his opening statement to poke fun at his injury and lighten the mood.
Mike Pence to Ramaswamy:
“Now is not the time for on-the-job training. We don’t need to bring in a rookie.”
Ramaswamy’s rising popularity in the polls led to clashes with Pence during the debate. Pence emphasized his conservative credentials and political experience, contrasting them with Ramaswamy’s lack of experience.
Ron DeSantis:
“Mike did his duty. I have no beef with him.”
When asked about Pence’s actions on January 6, 2021, DeSantis evaded the question. However, under pressure from the moderators, he provided an awkward response before swiftly moving on.
Nikki Haley to Ramaswamy:
“You are choosing a murderer over a pro-American country.”
Haley and Ramaswamy clashed over aid to Ukraine. While Haley advocated for more assistance to defend against Russian aggression, Ramaswamy wanted to halt aid. This heated exchange ensued as a result.
Ramaswamy:
“Who the heck is this skinny guy with a funny last name, and what the heck is he doing in the middle of this debate stage?”
Ramaswamy, initially unknown in the political arena, has gained momentum in the polls. To address his relative obscurity, he used his opening statement to humorously acknowledge his newcomer status.
However, this comment came back to haunt him when Christie pointed out its similarity to former President Barack Obama’s speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, where Obama referred to himself as “a skinny kid with a funny name.”
“The last person at one of these debates, Bret, who stood in the middle of the stage and said, ‘What’s a skinny guy with an odd last name doing up here?’ was Barack Obama, and I’m afraid we’re dealing with the same type of amateur,” Christie responded to Ramaswamy’s statement.
