Two House lawmakers have formed a bipartisan caucus to raise awareness of China’s human rights violations against the Uyghur people. On Thursday, Reps. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) announced the creation of the Congressional Uyghur Caucus.

“Put simply, we’re talking about the largest coordinated human rights abuse campaign of the 21st century being perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party,” said Suozzi. “Not only as members of Congress, but as human beings we have a responsibility to uphold the values of fundamental human dignity and religious freedom abroad.”

They said the goal is to support legislation aimed at addressing the largest coordinated human rights abuse campaign of the 21st century being carried out by the Chinese Communist Party. U.N. human rights experts believe up to one million Uyghur Muslims are currently being held in internment camps in the Xinjiang region. In addition, it is believed they are being subjected to forced labor, eating pork and forced sterilization.
