Dozens of American military working dogs were left behind in Afghanistan. According to reports on Monday, 46 dogs were left at the Kabul airport after the U.S. finished its withdrawal from the region.

Former U.S. Navy SEAL and former FBI agent John T. Gilliam said that the order to leave the working dogs behind came directly from the Pentagon. He asked, “who are the contractors and who are the people in the chain of command that did this? How much more does America need to trim this tree?”

Efforts to save the dogs are being made by the group Veteran Sheepdogs of America who called the whole situation a mess. They have raised over $1.5 million so far to secure a flight out for the service members.
