Report: Education Secretary Added Teachers To Advisory Board To Ensure Their Support Of ‘Woke’ Curriculum
The Biden administration’s Education Secretary reportedly invited teachers to join a Connecticut curriculum review board to ensure their support of the state’s new “woke” agenda.
A report from Fox News uncovered that Education Secretary Miguel Cardona — who was previously Connecticut’s Education Secretary — offered powerful teachers positions on an “Advisory Group” that was tasked with formulating a new history curriculum for the state. Teachers were invited with the hope that they would become more supportive of the altered curriculum if they had a say in it.
In emails, Cardona said that he wanted to invite the Connecticut “Teacher of the Year” to join the advisory committee because “we need teachers behind this wave of our curriculum becoming more ‘woke.’”
Meghan Hatch Geary, the high school English teacher and recipient of the 2020 “Teacher of the Year” award, was elevated by Cardona for her extensive background in social justice work. In an email, Cardona said of Geary, she “studied Black and Latino studies for her Master’s Program … Has created programming incorporating social justice, for race and gender inequalities … Her application included more references to the importance of Black leaders in History than anything I have read before … Understand curriculum reduces invisibility for students of color and creates global preparedness for all students.”
Geary’s current Twitter biography claims that “there is no such thing as an apolitical classroom.” She also dubs herself a feminist and an “antiracist-focused educator.”
The “expert review panel” that Geary and other teachers were placed on was also filled with activists who support critical race theory being taught in the classroom. According to the Washington Free Beacon, one reviewer, Glenn Singleton, founded an organization that teaches students that individualism, competition, politeness, the scientific method, planning for the future, and the nuclear family are “aspects and assumptions of white culture.”
Another member of the review panel, National Council for Social Studies President Stefanie Wager, said that social studies should be used to combat racism.
The new curriculum is for a required, state-wide course in African-American, Black, Puerto Rican, and Latino studies. The curriculum supposedly helps students “consider the scope of African American/Black and Puerto Rican/Latino contributions to U.S. history, society, economy, and culture” and is rooted in “critical race theory,” which claims that America is inherently racist.
On December 2, the Connecticut State Board of Education approved the curriculum for the mandatory course.
Connecticut’s new curriculum is indicative of a broader push for “woke” studies in the American education system. The Department of Education, under Cardona’s leadership, has proposed a new rule that would prioritize federal dollars to education groups that help schools create and implement “anti-racist” teaching standards.
The proposal would direct federal funding to contractors who “improve” K-12 curriculum by promoting “racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically responsive teaching and learning practices.”
The Education Department claims that the move was made in light of the “ongoing national reckoning with systemic racism.”
