Congressman Mike Johnson (R-La.) has called for Democrats to take up measures to help stop gun violence without infringing on the Second Amendment. During an interview with One America News Friday, Johnson said the recent mass shooting at an Indianapolis FedEx facility was absolutely tragic.

When asked about any constitutional measures the left could propose to help curb violence, Johnson said mental health needs to be addressed, but the idea of banning so-called “assault weapons” is a step too far.

“We have to jealously guard the Second Amendment,” Rep. Johnson said. “There is always a knee-jerk kind of reaction. People want the country to be safe, they want our communities to be safe, but the answer is not to restrict the inalienable rights of law-abiding citizens in that process.”

The Louisiana congressman went on to say, there are many things Congress can do, and that it should be involved, but it should not take account of “where everybody’s guns are to try to confiscate them.”

“We should be investing in mental health, we should be investing in information sharing amongst law enforcement facilities,” Johnson stated. “We should make sure that people who have mental instability don’t have access to firearms, but there are meaningful ways to approach that in terms of public policy that don’t trample upon the Second Amendment. And that’s what we’re trying to prevent happening here.”

This came after the Biden administration repeated its talking points about taking action against so-called “ghost guns” and imposing “red flag” fire-arm restrictions.
