Rand Paul is skeptical US will use military to take Greenland
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) expressed skepticism that the U.S. will use military action to take Greenland.
The Kentucky senator made the comments on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday during an interview with Kirstin Welker, after Paul was asked if “annexing Greenland would be an impeachable offense.”
“The difficulty about saying you’re going to impeach somebody because of a constitutional dispute, we have these all the time,” Paul said. “We’re not even positive how the court will decide this.”
“I think it’s my job as part of Congress to discuss and check and balance the presidential powers, but I don’t think every time there’s a dispute between the presidential powers and congressional powers, that is something that we impeach people for,” Paul added.
Paul then spoke about the prospect of military conflict in Greenland, stating that he doesn’t think such a thing will happen.
“I’m hoping we’ll have these debates, that they’ll be thorough, and I’m hoping we don’t get to a military invasion,” Paul said. “I kind of actually don’t think we’re going to because, quietly, there’s not a Republican that’s come up to me and said, ‘Oh yes, I’ll back him to the hilt.’”
Paul’s comments came after tensions between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland have intensified, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly stressed the need for the U.S. to acquire Greenland. Trump has suggested a purchase of the Arctic island as well as military action to obtain it. Many of the comments from the president and his insistence on obtaining Greenland have occurred after U.S. Delta Forces captured and extracted former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.
WHY TRUMP IS SO INTERESTED IN GREENLAND
Paul’s remarks about Greenland focused on recent congressional efforts to advance a war powers resolution that would limit Trump’s ability to order military action, such as the operation in Venezuela.
Paul was a co-sponsor of the legislation, which initially included four other Republican senators: Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Sen. Todd Young (R-IN).
