Rand Paul accuses Democratic senators of ignoring Laken Riley Act
Sen. Rand Paul’s Concerns Regarding the Laken Riley Act
In a recent appearance on The Story with Martha MacCallum, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) raised doubts about the Senate’s willingness to pass the Laken Riley Act. The Act, named in honor of Laken Riley, a nursing student at Augusta University who tragically lost her life at the hands of Venezuelan illegal immigrant Jose Ibarra, seeks to mandate immigration officials to detain immigrants facing criminal charges.
“I think it will get unanimous Republican support, but we’re one short — one vote short. I think the Democrats will be either unanimous or nearly unanimously against this,” Paul expressed. “They have voted in the past that they don’t care. We talked about deporting people or keeping people in jail and there has been no concern on the other side about trying to tackle people with criminal records or people who have actively engaged in crime.”
The Tragic Incident and Legislative Response
The perpetrator, Ibarra, was living near the University of Georgia campus in Athens, Georgia, when he committed the heinous act while Riley was out jogging. Despite previous knowledge of his status as an illegal immigrant, authorities released him back into the country instead of deportation, ultimately resulting in this devastating incident.
Passing through the House with a 251-170 vote, including support from 37 Democratic representatives, the bill faces uncertainty in the Senate due to lack of bipartisan consensus.
“They care more about spending money we don’t have,” Paul criticized the Democratic senators. “They are more concerned with shoveling the money out the door than they are with the death of this young woman and trying to prevent this from happening to other people. It’s a disgrace. It is an utter disgrace.”
Georgia’s Local Response
Georgia has taken its own measures by passing House Bill 1105, empowering local authorities to detain immigrants for deportation if found to be in the country illegally. The bill enforces strict reporting guidelines for local offices, threatening state funding repercussions for non-compliance.
Jason Riley, Laken’s father, attributed his daughter’s tragic fate to Athens’s sanctuary status and urged the state Senate to reconsider its policies to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
