Qantas CEO to leave early amid airline’s reputation scrutiny.
(Reuters) – Qantas Airways announced today that its long-serving CEO, Alan Joyce, will be stepping down from the company earlier than expected. This decision comes as Australia’s flagship carrier faces reputational turbulence.
Vanessa Hudson, the first woman to lead the century-old airline, will take over as CEO starting tomorrow.
Qantas recently apologized for falling short of service standards and acknowledged the reputational damage it has suffered. The airline is facing a lawsuit from Australia’s competition regulator, which alleges that Qantas sold tickets for thousands of cancelled flights.
Alan Joyce, who served as CEO for 15 years, stated, “In the last few weeks, the focus on Qantas and events of the past make it clear to me that the company needs to move ahead with its renewal as a priority.”
Last week, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) filed a court document accusing the carrier of breaking consumer law by selling tickets to over 8,000 flights without disclosing their cancellation.
Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder commented on Joyce’s early departure, saying, “This transition comes at what is obviously a challenging time for Qantas and its people. We have an important job to do in restoring the public’s confidence in the kind of company we are, and that’s what the board is focused on, and what the management under Vanessa’s leadership will do.”
In June, Qantas announced several leadership changes to enhance its focus on key areas as the airline continues its post-pandemic recovery.
Last month, the carrier reported record annual earnings, driven by a strong rebound in travel demand.
