New York urges renewed mask use amid new COVID variant.
Masking Up in the Bronx: Residents Concerned as COVID-19 Cases Rise
As the New York State Health Department alerts Bronx residents about a supposed increase in COVID-19 cases, some locals are taking matters into their own hands and promoting the importance of wearing masks.
The latest report reveals that the seven-day average for COVID-19 cases has surged from 2.1% on July 21 to a concerning 11.8% on Aug. 21. This uptick coincides with the return of children to school and the arrival of fall weather.
“We get all kinds of diseases … they come and they go, and that’s just part of life,”
– Peter Cordero, Bronx resident
Peter Cordero, a Bronx local, understands the risks and takes precautions accordingly. ”When I find myself in crowded places with lots of people, I definitely put on a mask,” he said. “I don’t want to get sick.”
Cordero emphasized that he will continue to wear a mask whenever he feels at risk. His sentiment is echoed by Lorenzo Rodriguez, another concerned resident.
“I put [a mask] on when I go into a bus or a store, honestly anywhere I put it on,”
– Lorenzo Rodriguez, Bronx resident
Rodriguez expressed his disappointment in the lack of mask-wearing among others. “Sometimes I see 50 people on the bus and only one or two people have their masks on, even though we’re crammed in there like animals,” he said.
For Rodriguez, the only circumstance that would lead him to remove his mask is if it becomes illegal to wear one. “If it’s legal, I’m not gonna stop wearing it,” he affirmed.
The New York City Department of Health reported that the seven-day average for cases was 672 as of Aug. 14, a significant increase from the 286 reported cases in May. In response, free testing kits will be provided to staff and students returning to New York City schools.
