Puppy ODs on Owner’s Fentanyl, Cops Respond Swiftly.
Puppy Overdoses After Getting Into Owner’s Fentanyl Stash, Police Officers Know Exactly What to Do
A pit bull puppy in California had a close call after getting into its owners’ fentanyl stash. Thankfully, quick-thinking police officers administered an overdose-reversing drug, saving the puppy’s life.
The dog’s owners, a man and a woman, were arrested and may face charges of drug possession and animal cruelty, according to the Irvine Police Department.
A Surprising Encounter
The incident unfolded during a routine encounter between the couple and the police outside a Walmart. Officers discovered fentanyl in their car, leading to the immediate arrest of the two individuals.
Unexpectedly, the female suspect alerted the officers to a distressing situation. “Oh, I think my dog is overdosing,” she said, revealing that this was not the first time the dog had experienced such an ordeal.
A Mysterious Exposure
It remains unclear how the dog came into contact with the powerful drug, which is known to be up to 50 times more potent than heroin. While a dose as small as 2 milligrams can be fatal to humans, dogs are generally less sensitive to its effects.
Officer Kyle Oldoerp commented, ”If they’re using drugs in their car, we can only speculate” about the circumstances surrounding the dog’s exposure.
A Life-Saving Intervention
At the police station, officers wasted no time in administering naloxone, an overdose-reversing drug, to the puppy. Miraculously, the dog responded quickly to the treatment and began to recover.
The identities of the man and woman have not been disclosed. The authorities will retain custody of the puppy until a hearing determines whether it should be returned to its owners, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
