Psaki pushes back on ‘cover-up’ for Biden’s mental decline: ‘Aging happens quickly’
In a recent discussion, Jen Psaki, former White House press secretary during Joe biden’s presidency, defended the administration against accusations of covering up biden’s declining mental acuity. During an appearance on the podcast “Mixed Signals,” Psaki stated that his mental decline occurred quickly and that the staff did not attempt to hide it.She emphasized that Biden’s age was well-known and that claims of a “cover-up” were exaggerated, pointing to right-wing media narratives that focused on Biden’s gaffes. Psaki acknowledged the criticisms about Biden’s cognitive state but maintained that he appeared sharp in her personal interactions wiht him. This topic has gained attention following the release of a book examining Biden’s mental decline, which has sparked further debate about his fitness for office.
Psaki pushes back on idea of ‘cover-up’ for Biden’s mental decline: ‘Aging happens quickly’
MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki defended the Biden administration that once employed her by suggesting they didn’t cover up then-President Joe Biden‘s mental decline, that it just happened “quite quickly.”
Psaki served as the White House press secretary during the first half of Biden’s term. In the months since Biden left office, many revelations have emerged about his mental acuity while serving as president of the United States, even before and while he was running for reelection. According to Psaki, his staff never tried to hide his mental state, but he declined rapidly.
“I left in May of 2022 — just for the facts here — and I have seen Biden once since then when I took my daughter to the holiday party this last December after he had lost. So I hadn’t seen him in person during that period of time. I never saw that person not a single time — and I was in the Oval Office every day — that was on that debate stage. I’m not a doctor. Aging happens quite quickly,” Psaki said on the Mixed Signals podcast on Saturday.
When asked about her fellow White House staff covering up Biden’s state, Psaki claimed the term “cover-up” was a “loaded term.” Instead, she pointed to “right-wing” media outlets for reporting on Biden’s early gaffes in office.
“Joe Biden was — he was in his early 80s during that period of time. We all knew his age. That was not a secret,” Psaki went on. “While we know there were problematic things behind the scenes now in ’23 and ’24 there was an aggressive all-out pitching operation from the right-wing and from the Republicans about Joe Biden’s age and how he was in decline and like sleeping in the Oval Office a lot of which wasn’t true — most of which the majority of which wasn’t true in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 OK?”
Host Ben Smith pushed back on Psaki, asking, “They were correct, weren’t they?” This prompted a response of “that may be” from Psaki, who still claimed that Biden appeared sharp in her personal interactions with him.
WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AWARDS BIDEN COVERAGE
Axios reporter Alex Thompson won the Aldo Beckman Award for his coverage of former President Joe Biden‘s mental decline during his time in office, which was the topic of his book, Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again.
Thompson originally had a contract with Simon and Schuster to release the book last year, but the publisher withdrew. Following Thompson’s public plea to find a new publisher and release the book in 2025, Penguin Press took on the project.
