Some protesters were also seen setting off smoke bombs and flares while attempting to walk to the Met.

The event has taken place inside the Met without disruptions from protesters so far. Prior to the protesters breaking barricades, the NYPD said they were upping security measures near the event.

“The NYPD will have adequate security deployment,” the department said in a statement.

Anti-Israel protests have taken over college campuses in recent weeks, notably at Columbia University. The university recently cleared its encampment and will have NYPD on campus for the remainder of the school year. The school’s main commencement ceremony has been canceled as a result of the protests.
