Pro-DeSantis board rejects woke Navy admiral’s presidency bid.

Florida⁢ State ‌Board Blocks Hiring⁢ of‌ Navy ‍Official with Woke Policies as FAU President

A Florida state board allied with Governor Ron ‍DeSantis has taken action ⁤to prevent Florida Atlantic⁢ University (FAU) ⁢from⁤ considering the ‌hiring of a ‍U.S. Navy official with a ‌history ‌of ‌supporting‌ woke ⁢policies as ⁤its president. The⁤ board⁢ has halted⁤ the search process ‌and launched an investigation into the matter.

Ray ⁣Rodrigues, the chancellor of‍ the‌ Florida Board of Governors, cited “anomalies” as⁤ the reason for ‍stopping‌ the search for ⁢a new⁤ president of‍ the ‍Boca⁤ Raton-based ‌school, as reported by WLRN. Rodrigues ⁤expressed disapproval of FAU’s search firm‍ using ⁣a survey that included ⁢personal ⁢questions about candidates’ demographics,⁢ such as their⁢ sexual orientation and preferred pronouns. He ‍deemed these questions “wholly‍ irrelevant,⁢ inappropriate,‍ and ‌potentially ⁣illegal.”

Rodrigues ⁤also objected to the use of a straw poll to ‍narrow down ‍the pool of ⁢candidates, ‍arguing ‌that the rankings submitted⁣ by ⁣search committee members⁤ to the search firm should ⁣have been conducted in a ⁤public meeting, as required by state law.

Among‍ the three ⁢finalists ⁢considered for the position of FAU president‍ was Navy Vice Admiral ‍and⁤ Superintendent of the U.S. Naval⁤ Academy Sean Buck.‍ However, Buck’s support ‌for‍ woke policies raised ⁢concerns. According to anti-woke⁤ champion Christopher‌ Rufo, Buck was‌ the ⁢lead ‌signatory on a radical diversity, ‌equity, and inclusion (DEI) ⁣program at‍ the Naval⁣ Academy, ⁤which included the ‍implementation ⁢of ‌diversity and inclusion staff, racial quotas, and annual diversity and inclusion summits.

Rufo,‌ who has ⁤collaborated⁣ closely with ‌Governor DeSantis⁤ to address far-left‍ hiring ⁣and teaching‍ practices⁣ in‍ Florida’s university ‍system, also ⁤criticized ‌Buck’s record on protecting individual rights. He ⁤highlighted Buck’s‌ policy‌ of denying all religious exemption ‍requests for the COVID vaccine, ⁤even for low-risk individuals.

In‌ a ⁢letter to⁤ the chair ⁤of the FAU Board ‌of Trustees, ⁢Rodrigues highlighted another concern. He mentioned that at⁣ least one candidate reported being ⁢asked‌ about their ‌sexual orientation,⁢ gender identity, and preferred pronouns. Rodrigues deemed these inquiries “wholly irrelevant,⁤ inappropriate, and potentially illegal.”
