Pro-DeSantis board rejects woke Navy admiral’s presidency bid.
Florida State Board Blocks Hiring of Navy Official with Woke Policies as FAU President
A Florida state board allied with Governor Ron DeSantis has taken action to prevent Florida Atlantic University (FAU) from considering the hiring of a U.S. Navy official with a history of supporting woke policies as its president. The board has halted the search process and launched an investigation into the matter.
Ray Rodrigues, the chancellor of the Florida Board of Governors, cited “anomalies” as the reason for stopping the search for a new president of the Boca Raton-based school, as reported by WLRN. Rodrigues expressed disapproval of FAU’s search firm using a survey that included personal questions about candidates’ demographics, such as their sexual orientation and preferred pronouns. He deemed these questions “wholly irrelevant, inappropriate, and potentially illegal.”
Rodrigues also objected to the use of a straw poll to narrow down the pool of candidates, arguing that the rankings submitted by search committee members to the search firm should have been conducted in a public meeting, as required by state law.
Among the three finalists considered for the position of FAU president was Navy Vice Admiral and Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy Sean Buck. However, Buck’s support for woke policies raised concerns. According to anti-woke champion Christopher Rufo, Buck was the lead signatory on a radical diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program at the Naval Academy, which included the implementation of diversity and inclusion staff, racial quotas, and annual diversity and inclusion summits.
Rufo, who has collaborated closely with Governor DeSantis to address far-left hiring and teaching practices in Florida’s university system, also criticized Buck’s record on protecting individual rights. He highlighted Buck’s policy of denying all religious exemption requests for the COVID vaccine, even for low-risk individuals.
Buck also led the policy of denying all religious exemption requests for the COVID vaccine. 18 students at the Naval Academy requested exemptions and Buck denied them all, despite the fact that, due to their age, the midshipmen had a very low risk profile.https://t.co/svqPJ4HWR1 pic.twitter.com/RX2axRBPu3

In a letter to the chair of the FAU Board of Trustees, Rodrigues highlighted another concern. He mentioned that at least one candidate reported being asked about their sexual orientation, gender identity, and preferred pronouns. Rodrigues deemed these inquiries “wholly irrelevant, inappropriate, and potentially illegal.”

Rodrigues has announced that the investigation into the hiring process will be supervised by Inspector General Julie Leftheris. He assured that the investigation will be thorough, fair, and not rushed.
