White House believes Wagner leader died in Prigozhin plane crash.
The White House “Increasingly Confident” in Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Death
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, announced on Monday that they are “increasingly confident“ in the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Wagner Group. Prigozhin was reportedly on a business jet that crashed in the Tver region while traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Russian authorities confirmed his presence through DNA testing.
Early Assessment Points to Prigozhin’s Death
Air Force Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon’s press secretary, stated that their initial assessment suggests Prigozhin was killed in the plane crash. However, he clarified that the reports of a surface-to-air missile causing the crash were inaccurate. The Department of Defense continues to evaluate the situation.
Kremlin Denies Responsibility
The Kremlin denied any involvement in sabotaging the plane. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the families of the victims but did not assign blame to Ukraine or any other party. It remains uncertain whether the events are connected.
Prigozhin’s Revolt and Accusations
In June, Prigozhin led a brief revolt against Russian defense leaders, accusing them of wrongdoing and deception regarding the war in Ukraine. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko claimed to have mediated an agreement to prevent further escalation. The circumstances surrounding Prigozhin’s death have raised speculation about Putin’s potential involvement, given the history of critics meeting unfortunate fates.
