The White House “Increasingly Confident” in⁤ Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Death

The ⁣White House press secretary,‌ Karine Jean-Pierre, announced on Monday that they are⁢ “increasingly confident“⁢ in the death of‍ Yevgeny Prigozhin, the⁢ founder of Wagner Group.⁣ Prigozhin was reportedly on a business jet that crashed in ‌the Tver region while traveling from Moscow ⁢to St. Petersburg. Russian ‍authorities confirmed his presence through DNA testing.

Early Assessment⁢ Points to Prigozhin’s Death

Air Force Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon’s press secretary, stated that their initial⁣ assessment suggests Prigozhin was killed in the plane⁢ crash. However, he clarified that the reports of⁣ a surface-to-air missile causing the crash were inaccurate. The ‌Department ​of‍ Defense continues to evaluate the situation.

Kremlin Denies Responsibility

The Kremlin denied any involvement in sabotaging the plane. Russian President Vladimir Putin ⁤expressed his condolences to ‍the families of the victims but did not assign ⁤blame to Ukraine or any other party. It remains uncertain whether the events are ‌connected.

Prigozhin’s Revolt and Accusations

In June, Prigozhin​ led a brief revolt against Russian⁤ defense leaders, accusing them of wrongdoing and deception regarding the war ⁤in Ukraine. Belarusian​ leader Alexander Lukashenko claimed to ​have mediated an agreement to prevent further escalation.
