Portugal is refusing to reimpose coronavirus lockdowns amid the latest media frenzy over the Delta strain. On Thursday, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said he’s lifting the remaining coronavirus restrictions despite calls for the exact opposite.
Costa told reporters the final reopening will take place in three stages, the first of which begins next Sunday. He added, 57 percent of Portugal’s population are expected to be fully-vaccinated from COVID-19. This comes in addition to the number of people who have recovered from the virus and will allegedly be enough to create herd immunity, so says Costa.

“Identical rules for the whole of the country: the end of restrictions for all businesses with a general closure at 2:00 a.m. and intensive use of the vaccination certificate or as an alternative a rapid test,” stated the Portuguese prime minister. “Beyond these three generic rules, we will begin freeing all activities in three stages.”
Costa said, however, controversial proof of vaccine or COVID-19 test requirements will remain in place for now due to European Union rules.
