A Portland police officer was injured while assisting DEA agents with serving a warrant in the northern part of the city. Reports said agents arrived at the apartment early on Friday where an armed suspect threatened to open fire. The suspect eventually fired at least one shot through the wall, hitting the officer in the hip. Law enforcement then returned fire, killing the suspect.
The Portland Police chief said violent crime is something on the bureau’s mind given their limited resources.
“There is a rise in shootings and homicides in Portland. Violent crime is something we’re deeply concerned about,” said Chief Chuck Lovell. “We have fewer officers than we did a year ago and we’re trying to do our best to figure out the best response models and how we can use our limited resources to address it.”

The chief added the officer is in good spirits and has now begun his recovery at home. Nearby apartments were evacuated during the incident and homicide units have taken over the investigation.
