Pope Leo XIV called for a sweeping ban on aerial bombardment, declaring that airplanes should be carriers of peace and that no one should fear death and destruction from the sky as the Iran conflict enters its fourth week. Speaking to a delegation from Italy’s ITA Airways, the pope said aircraft must never be used as instruments of war and argued that bombing should have been outlawed long ago, insisting that technological progress should serve peace, not war.He avoided naming specific countries, focusing instead on the human toll and the need to protect civilians. Amid ongoing violence in Iran, he has repeatedly urged peace and a ceasefire, calling the violence a scandal to the whole human family. He also alluded to strikes on civilian targets, including a suspected U.S. missile strike on an Iranian school that reportedly killed up to 175 people.

Pope calls for ban on airstrikes, says no one should fear ‘death and destruction’ from above

Pope Leo XIV called for a sweeping ban on aerial bombardment, declaring that no one should live in fear of “death and destruction” from the sky as the Iran war enters week four.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation on Monday from Italy’s ITA Airways, the carrier that usually transports the pontiff on international trips, the pope said aircraft must never be used as an instrument of war.

“Airplanes should always be carriers of peace, never of war,” the pope said. “No one should be afraid that threats of death and destruction might come from the sky.”

Citing the destruction in the 20th century, the pope argued that bombing should have been outlawed long ago.

“After the tragic experiences of the 20th century, aerial bombings should have been banned forever,” he said. “Instead, they still exist, and technological development, positive in itself, is being placed at the service of war. This is not progress; it is regression.”

While he did not explicitly reference the war in Iran on Monday, the pope has repeatedly called for peace in recent days. On Sunday, he decried the violence in Iran as a “scandal to the whole human family.”

Last week, the pope urged a ceasefire. “Violence can never lead to the justice, stability, and peace that the people are waiting for,” he said

The pontiff has avoided naming specific countries or leaders, instead emphasizing the human toll of the war and the need to protect civilians.

He has alluded to recent strikes on civilian targets, including a suspected missile attack by the United States on an Iranian school that killed up to 175 people, most of whom were schoolchildren, which was believed to be caused by an intelligence failure.
