Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) has an even bigger future in state politics.
The first statewide-elected black woman when she won her election to the commonwealth’s No. 2 post beside Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) in 2021, she leads the Republican attorney general in a hypothetical 2025 gubernatorial matchup.
“Yeah, of course” it’s good news for Earle-Sears, Cygnal pollster Mitchell Brown said. And, he added, it’s not bad news for Attorney General Jason Miyares (R-VA) because he could win reelection to his post.
In the Cygnal survey, Earle-Sears leads Miyares, 43.5% to 15.8%. Brown’s analysis read: “Sears holds an impressive 28-point advantage over Miyares on the governor’s ballot. Among voters who definitely support either candidate, Sears leads by +23 getting 30% to Miyares’s 7%.”
Earle-Sears is also better known than Miyares despite his newsy and regular criticism of the Biden administration on hot-button topics for Republicans.

An independent adviser to state Republicans said Earle-Sears, a conservative Republican who retired from the Marine Corps, is a popular figure in party politics. However, months ago, she called on Republicans to find another presidential candidate than former President Donald Trump.
While it is unclear who will end up running to replace Youngkin, who is limited to just one four-year term, Earle-Sears has a good chance to be the first black female governor of Virginia, the former capital of the Confederacy, the survey suggests.
