A recent Federalist article reports on a Cygnal poll of likely 2026 voters that finds broad support for deporting illegal immigrants and for strong ICE enforcement.

Key points:

– Poll size and timing: 1,004 likely 2026 voters surveyed Jan. 27–28, with a margin of error of about 3.09%.

– Main findings: 61% favor removing illegal aliens from teh U.S.to their country of origin, while 34% oppose. 54% support ICE enforcing federal immigration laws to remove illegal immigrants, and 58% oppose efforts to defund ICE.

– Public sentiment on immigration: 73% agree that individuals who enter the U.S. illegally have broken the law; 64% view illegal immigration as a problem in America.

– Political implications: The data suggest voters favor law enforcement and deportation, and Democrats’ attempts to defund ICE or shut down the government over immigration funding could affect congressional margins, with GOP gains possible in those scenarios.

– Additional context: The article references a tweet by Sean Davis highlighting the polling results and discusses related issues in Minnesota, as well as differences in enforcement approaches in states like West Virginia and South Dakota.

– About the author: The piece is by Shawn Fleetwood, a Federalist staff writer and prize-winning investigative journalist, with a note on his background and a link to more of his work.

Nearly two-thirds of likely 2026 midterm election voters support deporting illegal aliens from the United States, a new poll released Monday shows.

In its latest survey of 1,004 likely 2026 voters, the political polling firm Cygnal found that respondents support removing illegal aliens from America and sending them back to their country of origin by a nearly 2:1 margin (61 to 34 percent). The poll also found strong support for ICE enforcement of federal immigration laws and agreement that illegally entering the United States is a violation of such laws.

“Voters see illegal immigration as a simple question of law and order,” Cygnal Founder and CEO Brent Buchanan said in a statement. “The data leaves no wiggle room. Americans want the law enforced, they want illegal immigrants removed, and they punish politicians who try to block ICE from doing its job.”

The survey was conducted from Jan. 27 to Jan. 28 and has a margin of error of 3.09 percent.

According to the Cygnal data, 73 percent of respondents agreed when asked if “individuals who have entered the United States without legal permission have broken the law,” compared with 22 percent who disagreed. The survey furthermore found that a majority (54 percent) support ICE “enforcing federal immigration laws to remove illegal immigrants from the U.S.” and oppose (58 percent) efforts to defund the agency — including majorities of swing voters.

Nearly two-thirds of likely voters (64 percent) also said they believe illegal immigration is “a problem” in America, according to the data.

Democrat-led efforts to shut down the federal government over ICE funding to protest the Trump administration’s deportation policies similarly fared poorly among surveyed voters. The poll found that while Democrats enjoy a 4-point lead in the congressional ballot, that lead evaporates if Democrats move to “defund ICE” (R+0) and shut down the government “to defund ICE” (R+2).

The new polling data comes amid a leftist onslaught of attacks on ICE and the Trump administration’s deportation efforts in places like Minneapolis, Minnesota, where two left-wing agitators were killed by immigration authorities after impeding lawful enforcement activities. The destructive antics — which have been encouraged by the state’s Democrat leaders — represent a stark difference from enforcement operations in other states like West Virginia and South Dakota, whose political leaders have cooperated with federal officials to uphold the law.

The survey responses also signal to Trump and Republicans that they should support the deportation of all illegal aliens in spite of Democrat opposition to such policies.
