Following a vehicle-ramming and shootout at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, law enforcement agencies nationwide have increased police presence around Jewish places of worship. Major departments, including the NYPD and Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, released statements that they have raised high-visibility patrols at Jewish institutions in their cities. FBI and ATF officials were on the scene, and the attacker died while no others were reported injured. The heightened security comes as antisemitic attacks are reportedly on the rise in the United States; the NYPD noted a 182% increase in antisemitic hate crimes in January 2026 compared with January 2025, with overall hate crimes up about 152%. The article also recalls a prior incident last year when two Israeli embassy staffers were shot outside the Capital jewish Museum in Washington, with the suspect allegedly saying, “I did it for Palestine. I did it for Gaza.”
