Police-state tactics are undermining America’s global moral standing.
The U.S. Government’s Assault on Civil Liberties
The Justice Department’s most recent indictment of former President Donald Trump has sparked widespread outcry. The agency’s ongoing legal battle against Trump not only interfered in past elections but also threatens to interfere in the next one. These actions are just a few examples of the U.S. government’s war on Americans’ civil liberties.
In recent years, federal officials have colluded with Big Tech platforms to censor free speech, targeted pro-lifers, parents, and Catholics, and used Covid-19 as an excuse to impose unprecedented restrictions on American freedoms. The irony is that U.S. officials often criticize other countries for engaging in similar behaviors.
A Risk to America’s International Reputation
If the U.S. continues to embrace these police-state tactics, it risks damaging its international reputation. How can we expect other countries to take our concerns about human rights violations seriously if our own government treats its citizens like those of banana republics?
Chinese Communist Party officials have already used U.S. internal matters to gain the moral high ground during diplomatic exchanges. They have accused the U.S. of committing atrocities against its own people, citing the Black Lives Matter movement and the riots that followed George Floyd’s death.
It’s crucial for U.S. officials to respond to these accusations and defend the principles that made America a shining city on a hill. Failure to do so not only undermines the American republic but also damages our credibility worldwide.
