Police probe possible role of illicit drugs in ex-NFL player Mike Williams’ death.
Tampa Police Investigating Death of Former NFL Player Mike Williams
In a tragic turn of events, former NFL player Mike Williams has passed away at the age of 36 in Tampa. The Tampa Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into his death, following information that Williams may have received unprescribed drugs while hospitalized after a construction site accident.
The police department revealed that the probe revolves around the use of “unprescribed narcotics by an outside party.” Williams had been partially paralyzed due to the construction accident and tragically succumbed to his injuries on September 12 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
“We take all allegations of criminal activity seriously, and detectives are working tirelessly on this active investigation,” stated the Tampa police in an email. The investigation was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s office is also involved in the investigation of Williams’ death.
Williams, who was a fourth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010, had an impressive college career at Syracuse. As a rookie, he made 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns, starting in 52 out of the 54 games he played over four seasons with Tampa Bay.
After being traded to his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills, in 2014, Williams played nine games, recording eight catches for 142 yards and one touchdown in his sole season with the Bills. He concluded his career during the 2016 offseason as part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster.
