The second suspect, Johnluis Sanchez, 30, of Holyoke, remains hospitalized. Sanchez will be formally arraigned on a murder charge once his condition allows, with additional charges expected.
When contacted, a possible relative of Sanchez denied the allegations, stating that it was misinformation and that their attorney would be in touch.
Authorities are currently searching for a third suspect.
The shooting occurred on Wednesday at 12:38 p.m. Police responded to reports of an altercation involving three male suspects, which escalated into gunfire. State police and investigative units were dispatched to assist Holyoke Police in the investigation and search for the suspects.
The pregnant woman, who has not been identified, was shot while riding a public bus. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition but tragically, the infant did not survive.
According to Jose Almonte, manager of the Almonte Market 2, the chaotic scene unfolded right outside his store. He witnessed a man being attacked by two others, followed by the eruption of gunfire.
Almonte stated, “They went for him, and gunfire started.” He described a struggle and multiple shots being fired, causing others to seek cover. One man was shot in the leg and dragged into the store, while another with a gunshot wound to the hand fled the scene. The man who was initially attacked escaped on an electric bike with the handgun.
Brandy Pelletier, spokesperson for the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority, confirmed that one of their buses was involved in the shooting but declined to provide further details due to the ongoing investigation.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit and the Holyoke Police Department are leading the investigation.
