According to investigators, the fatal crash occurred when Mr. Esfahani and another driver, Hung Nguyen, were racing on Georgia 316 early in the morning on Labor Day. As they approached a slower vehicle, Mr. Esfahani attempted to pass it by swerving into the right-hand emergency lane on a curving flyover ramp that merges onto Interstate 85. At the same time, Nguyen passed the vehicle on the left.
Tragically, Mr. Esfahani’s Infiniti G35 collided with a truck that was stopped in the emergency lane, causing Nguyen’s Toyota Tacoma to spin, roll, and plunge over a concrete barrier, falling 37 feet (11.3 meters) to the ground. The truck came to rest upside down on an adjoining exit ramp.
The devastating crash claimed the lives of Hung Nguyen and four passengers, including three Lakeside High School students: Katy Gaitan, Ashley Gaitan, and Coral Lorenzo. Another passenger, Abner Santana, also lost his life. Jonathan Reyes, who was in the Tacoma, survived with minor injuries and was released from the hospital the following day.
Investigators revealed that two passengers in the truck were ejected during the crash, with one of them not wearing a seatbelt. The fate of the second passenger’s seatbelt usage remains unknown.
Additionally, a third driver on the exit ramp accidentally struck one of the victims who had been ejected from the Tacoma. The driver sustained injuries while attempting to climb over a bridge wall to get off the roadway, falling approximately 25 feet (7.6 meters) into a creek and suffering multiple fractures.
This devastating incident occurred approximately 23 miles (37 kilometers) northeast of downtown Atlanta.
