Poland detains Russian hockey player for alleged espionage.
Poland Detains Russian Ice Hockey Player on Spying Charges
The news broke today that Poland has detained a Russian professional ice-hockey player on spying charges. This marks the 14th person arrested from an espionage network. The player, who belongs to a first division Polish team, was taken into custody in the southern Polish region of Silesia. The player and his team have not been publicly identified. According to prosecutors, he arrived in Poland in October 2021.
Poland’s Battle Against Russian Spies
Poland, a key hub for western military supplies to Ukraine, has become a major target for Russian spies. The country accuses Moscow of trying to destabilize it. Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro expressed his satisfaction on Twitter, stating, “Russian spies are falling in one by one! A spy who acted under the guise of an athlete was caught. The Russian was a player of a first division club.”
Activities and Consequences
According to prosecutors, the detained player carried out activities such as identifying critical infrastructure, for which he received payment. He will be kept in pre-trial detention and could face up to 10 years in prison.
Russian Response
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has demanded an explanation from Poland regarding the arrest of Russian citizens, as reported by state news agency RIA.
Previous Espionage Network
In March, Poland announced the dismantling of a Russian espionage network operating within the country. Nine people were detained, accused of preparing acts of sabotage and monitoring rail routes to Ukraine. In April, Poland introduced a temporary 200-meter exclusion zone around its Swinoujscie Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal due to concerns about Russian espionage.
