Poland accuses Russia of ‘provocation’ after drone crash on the border

Poland on Wednesday accused Russia of provoking it after a Russian drone crashed in the eastern part of the country.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz lamented the crash, which happened around 2 a.m. on Wednesday near the Polish village of Osiny. The explosion broke windows in some nearby houses, but no injuries were reported.

“Russia is provoking us once again,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said at a news conference in Warsaw, as peace talks gave hope that the war in Ukraine “has a chance of ending.”

The crash comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump spoke in Alaska about peace in Ukraine. This week, Trump also held a summit with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the same topic.

No violations of Polish airspace from Ukraine or Belarus were recorded on Wednesday, according to Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command.

Kosiniak-Kamysz believes Russia will not admit to the crash.

“I’ll say one thing that is certain: Russia will never admit to this. Just as it hasn’t admitted to any of the eight incidents in Moldova, three incidents in Romania, three in Lithuania, two in Latvia, or the one drone incident in Bulgaria,” he said.

Polish Gen. Dariusz Malinowski, Armed Forces Operational Command deputy commander, said it’s unclear whether the crash was an intentional intrusion of Polish airspace or if the drone malfunctioned while targeting Ukraine.

Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Paweł Wroński confirmed that the country will send a diplomatic protest note to Russia in response to the crash. Wroński said the situation reminded Poland that it is also directly affected by the war in Ukraine.

“And so here we have visible proof that Poland’s airspace is also endangered by this war, that something could happen, something could explode, it is unsafe, people could die, and the security of an allied state of the North Atlantic Alliance is at risk,” he said.

Trump hopes to continue peace talks with Russia, including with a trilateral summit between himself, Zelensky, and Putin.

RUSSIA SAYS TALKS ABOUT UKRAINE’S SECURITY WITHOUT IT ARE A ‘ROAD TO NOWHERE’

One of the largest obstacles to peace has been possible Ukrainian land concessions. Zelensky has resisted such moves in the past and said he will not “gift” land to Russia.

“Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier,” Zelensky said.
