Most Americans lack confidence in DOJ’s Hunter Biden inquiry: Poll.
The Integrity of Hunter Biden Investigation Questioned by Americans
A recent poll has revealed that an increasing number of Americans have doubts about the integrity of the criminal investigation into Hunter Biden. According to an ABC News/Ipsos survey, 48% of U.S. adults expressed “Not so/Not confident at all” when asked about their confidence in the Department of Justice’s handling of the inquiry in a “fair and nonpartisan manner”.
This figure, which represents a “plurality” of Americans as described by ABC News, reflects a “wave” period of August 15-16. This period coincided with Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to elevate Delaware’s U.S. Attorney David Weiss to special counsel status. It is worth noting that this percentage is slightly higher than the previous wave period of August 2-3, during which 46% of respondents lacked confidence in the investigation.
Meanwhile, the number of Americans who expressed being “very” or “somewhat” confident dropped from 35% to 32% across the two poll waves.
Republican Criticism and Democratic Defense
Republicans have criticized Garland’s appointment of Weiss as special counsel, suggesting that it was an attempt to hinder congressional investigations into the Bidens. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy emphasized that the appointment should not obstruct ongoing investigations into the Biden family’s alleged corruption.
On the other hand, Democrats in Congress have defended the Department of Justice, arguing that Republicans have provided no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. They claim that the GOP is using these investigations as a distraction from criminal inquiries into former President Donald Trump.
The special counsel appointment has been hailed by Democrats as a demonstration of the Department of Justice’s independence. Rep. Dan Goldman praised the decision, highlighting the true independence of the department.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer dismissed the GOP investigations, stating that they are of no significance to the average American.
Legal Battles and Whistleblower Allegations
Hunter Biden, who pleaded not guilty to tax charges in Delaware, is now facing a clash with prosecutors over a pretrial diversion agreement on a felony firearm offense. The collapse of their plea deal has raised questions about the survival of this agreement. If convicted, Biden could face up to 10 years in prison on the felony gun charge.
Furthermore, whistleblower testimony from Internal Revenue Service agents involved in the Hunter Biden case has brought forth allegations that the investigation was deliberately delayed, potentially preventing additional charges.
Department of Justice leaders have refuted claims of politicization, asserting that the investigation has been conducted impartially.
