Planned Parenthood plans to sue Trump over ‘big, beautiful bill’

Planned Parenthood intends to sue the Trump governance over a newly passed tax adn spending bill, referred to as the “big, gorgeous bill,” which includes provisions that would defund the nonprofit health clinic. The bill specifically prohibits Medicaid funds from reimbursing clinics that perform elective abortions and aims to defund any abortion provider receiving over $800,000 in federal grants within one year. Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, stated that the bill represents a targeted attack on their health centers, risking the closure of nearly 200 facilities across 24 states, thereby affecting over 1.1 million patients’ access to essential healthcare services, including birth control and cancer screenings. The lawsuit follows a Supreme Court decision allowing states to exclude Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid programs.Trump is expected to sign the bill into law soon.

Planned Parenthood plans to sue Trump over ‘big, beautiful bill’

Planned Parenthood said it intends to sue the Trump administration over the recently passed “big, beautiful bill” that would “defund” the nonprofit health clinic.

Republicans’ massive tax and spending bill includes a provision that would prohibit Medicaid funds from being used to reimburse health clinics that provide elective abortions.

The bill would defund any abortion provider that receives more than $800,000 in federal grants and reimbursements. Senate Republicans revised the measure’s funding cutoff from 10 years to one.

“The reconciliation bill is a targeted attack on Planned Parenthood health centers and patients that cannot stand,” Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, said in a statement on Thursday.

“Everyone deserves access to high-quality, affordable health care. That’s what we’ve been fighting for the last century — and we’ll never stop. We’ll be suing the Trump administration to stop this unlawful attack. See you in court,” Johnson added.

WHAT MADE IT INTO THE SENATE’S FINAL ‘BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL’ AND WHAT DIDN’T

Planned Parenthood warned the bill could put nearly 200 of its health centers across 24 states at risk of closing. The nonprofit group said 90% of those closures would occur in states where abortion is legal. It added that more than 1.1 million patients could lose access to care for birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and abortion.

The expected lawsuit from Planned Parenthood follows a Supreme Court decision allowing states to exclude the nonprofit group and similar clinics from their Medicaid programs.

Trump plans to sign the megabill into law on Friday.
